What we don't do

As Governors, we appoint the Director General and, with him, Executive Directors, to run the BBC day to day. We monitor and supervise their work. But there are a number of things which are not within our remit, but explicitly down to BBC management.

While we are responsible for ensuring that the BBC is run in the public interest, it is not our responsibility to oversee its day to day business. That is the job of the Executive Board. This, the most senior management team within the BBC, has nine members and is chaired by the Director General. To find out more about what it does and how, go to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/running/executive/

This is why any general enquiries about how the organisation is run on a day to day basis should be addressed not to the Governors but to BBC Information, who deal with a wide range of queries on anything from scheduling information to reception problems. You can contact them via: http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/contactus/form.shtml

Similarly, although we approve the BBC's overall strategy, we are not responsible for commissioning programmes. If you are interested in finding out about how programmes are commissioned, or indeed want to submit programme ideas, you can do so by going to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/

Again, any editorial complaints should be addressed initially to the appropriate programme or to BBC Information. The BBC recently launched a new enhanced complaints procedure - details can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/. Here you can find out how to complain and how to appeal to the Board of Governors if you remain dissatisfied once the process has been completed.
