Who we are

We, the Governors of the BBC come from a wide range of backgrounds.

In this section of the site you will find a brief rundown of who we are and where we come from, and what made us want to become Governors.

Anthony Salz, Vice-Chairman

Anthony Salz, Vice-Chairman
Anthony Salz became Vice Chairman of the BBC on 1 August 2004. He is a former Co-senior partner of the law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and is also a Trustee of a number of organisations including the Eden Project and Tate Foundation.

Richard Tait
Richard Tait became a BBC Governor on 1 August 2004. Professor of Journalism and Director of the Centre for Journalism Studies at Cardiff University, he was Editor of Channel 4 News from 1987 to 1995 and Editor-in-Chief of ITN from 1995 to 2002.

Deborah Bull
Deborah Bull became a BBC Governor on 1 August 2003. Formally a Principal dancer with The Royal Ballet, she is now Creative Director of ROH2. She has also written extensively - books, journalism and BBC programmes and series.

Andrew Burns
Andrew Burns was appointed as the BBC's International Governor on 1 July 2005. Following a distinguished diplomatic career, he is now Chairman of the Council of Royal Holloway, University of London, and a Non-Executive Director of JP Morgan Fleming Chinese Investment Trust.

Jeremy Peat

Jeremy Peat
Jeremy Peat was appointed National Governor for Scotland as from 1st January 2005. Recently retired from his role as Group Chief Economist at the Royal Bank of Scotland, he has also advised many Government departments and has Honorary Professorships and Doctorates at numerous Scottish Universities.

Dermot Gleeson
Dermot Gleeson has been a BBC Governor since November 2000. He has worked in business for over 25 years. He joined the MJ Gleeson Group plc in 1982, where he is now Executive Chairman.

Merfyn Jones
Merfyn Jones became BBC National Governor for Wales on 1 January 2003. A historian and broadcaster, he is Vice Chancellor of the University of Wales and received a Bafta Cymru award in 2000 for his outstanding contribution to history on television.

Fabian Monds
Fabian Monds has been BBC National Governor for Northern Ireland since 1999. Academic, author and businessman, he helped found two computing firms and also chairs Invest Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma and Transformation.
