As Governors we are responsible for ensuring that the BBC operates in the interests of viewers and listeners.
On their behalf, we assess how effectively the BBC delivers its public purpose: to enrich people's lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain. To ensure that management focuses on delivering that public purpose, we set objectives each year and monitor performance against them.
These objectives provide a strategic framework for the BBC, but they are not the only measure we use to assess performance. Each spring we also publish the BBC Statements of Programme Policy which set out the remit for each service, and commit the BBC to providing a wide range of public service output. In the BBC Annual Report, as well as assessing performance against objectives, we also evaluate the BBC's performance against these remits and in delivering output commitments.
